A First Look at Tiger’s new VoiceOver

Jason Wong’s dad is apparently visually handicapped, so they were excited to hear about the new screen reader that’s part of the new OS X.

This is just the first of what I hope is many posts. The need for screen readers is sure to become more and more prevalent as computer usage embeds itself more and more deeply into our society (and as baby boomers head into old age and start to lose faculties).

An interesting snippet:

I was told that Apple had a blind person in QA, testing Voiceover for over a year. What’s more, he was using the 12″ Powerbook, with the lcd removed, making it the lightest Apple laptop ever built.

I blogged an interesting question about this the other day.. 456 Berea Street did a run down on VoiceOver and I was left wondering how hard it would be for someone truely blind to find the apporpriate documentation and to access it to learn how to use the screen reader? Apparently Roger Johansson, a web savvy professional, had a hard time getting it going.

But its overall a good move in the direction we would like, agreed. I’ve put G5 and OS X Tiger on my wish list actually so I’m not canning it. Just asking if its a screen reader for the developer or the disabled?
